Preparation
When replacing a new lawn firstly dig the site, break up the soil to a fine crumble and level. We produce quality topsoil to help you achieve the required levels of your lawn. All topsoil can be delivered in small 40kg bags up to 16-ton bulk loads. Leave fallow for at least four weeks to allow weed germination then apply special weedkiller - if you have children or pets, cover area in light plastic. Once weeds are out, dig in a pre-seeding fertiliser and rake soil. A golden rule is never to do it in the rain.
Laying
Start by laying the outside of the lawn shape first. Start laying the turf at the longest side first. Lay each turf side by side butted together, no overlapping. Create a tamper from a board on a broom handle and press turves in to place. After two rows, place scaffold planks on grass to work off and to firm pieces and protect from feet. Shrinkage happens when the turf is allowed to dry out. Watering should be done immediately after laying is complete and continue it daily for a full week.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is the key to a perfect lawn by mowing, feeding, watering, aerating and scarifying. The quality of the sward is directly controlled by the mowing height and frequency. The golden rule is to cut whenever the sward recovers to 50% above the height at which it is to be maintained. Clippings can be allowed to fly, except on the finest quality turf or where weather has enforced a delay and the bulk could cause turf damage if left. Never cut more than 1/3 in length of the grass at any one time. View our Maintenance schedule available for download
The optimum mowing height encourages tiller or shoot development but does not restrict root growth. Frequency will be influenced by growing conditions notably temperature, availability of moisture and nitrogen.
Toadstools in turf.
Toadstools in turf is a comon problem in most lawns first year. Usually around the summer to autumn period. They will not damage the turf and may help the lawn when they decay. Toadstools are easily controllable with a mixture of 1oz of Epson salts to a gallon of water over a square meter of turf affected. Eating the toadstools is not advisable children and pets must be kept well away. You may find that a simple brushing will remove them. Its quite probable that they will disappear as quickly as they came. |
